In a shocking incident which put the lives of the driver and several passengers at risk, two drunk men entered a KPN bus at the crowded private bus terminals zone in Koyembedu and threatened the driver on Wednesday night, according to multiple media reports.

The police have arrested one of them, Dinesh, but the other person Ganesh escaped from the spot. Police suspect that they had several other accomplices waiting near the bus.

The bus was supposed to travel from Chennai to Coimbatore. Pothiraj, the driver, told TNIE that around 11pm, the two men hit one of the indicator-bulbs on the bus, and the driver stepped out to check what had happened. The two men then threatened him with knives and asked him to start driving the bus.

According to  The New Indian Express, after the driver and Ganesh got into the bus, he asked him to start driving. Ganesh also hit the steering wheel four times with his knife but the driver refused. Later, Ganesh hit the driver on his neck using the back of the knife.

The driver said that the two men did not approach the passengers as he had locked the door. Soon, a police siren was heard because of which both of them started running. Dinesh was caught by the patrolling team. Ganesh crossed the road and disappeared, while his accomplices who were standing also ran away after seeing Ganesh run. The Times of India reported that the passengers insisted that the gang members had tried to rob them.

K Ganesan, manager of KPN Travels, said that Ganesh had booked a seat in the bus for Coimbatore and had turned up around 9pm for the 10:30pm bus. One of the passenger’s relative had seen him drinking with his friends.

The CCTV footage showed that Ganesh entered the KPN office around 10pm to know when the bus would reach.

Anna Nagar Deputy commissioner of police Feroze Khan Abdullah told TOI that their intention was not to rob passengers but to threaten the passengers and create panic. Dinesh told police that he and his friends hailed from Thiruvallur.
