Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday said Congress should elevate its vice president Rahul Gandhi to the party's top post instead of "planting stories" about his "imminent elevation".

"Isn't Congress fed up of planting 'Rahul's imminent elevation' stories?" Omar, who was an ally of Congress in UPA-II, wrote on Twitter.

"Been reading them for years now. Just do it and let him get on," he said.

The BJP also issued a statement. “We are hearing news that Rahul Gandhi would be made the Congress president, it is their internal matter. But till yesterday Sonia Gandhi was referring to Prime Minister Modi as a ‘shahenshah’ and today we are hearing the news of her shehzada’s (prince) coronation. The entire nation now is watching what the ‘shahenshaiyat’ (dynastic politics) actually is,” said Sambit Patra, BJP spokesperson.

Punjab Congress chief Capt Amarinder had said yesterday that it is the right moment for Rahul to take over the reins of the party from his mother and also backed Priyanka’s entry into active politics.

“Sonia is a brilliant leader. I have said she has been working (as Congress chief) for the past 20 years. If she feels time has come to give it to a new generation, then she should pass it on and we will fully support Rahul,” he said.
