Following the high-profile surrender of notorious underworld don Binu, several rowdies have also followed suit, turning themselves in to the Chennai city police.

On February 6, underworld don Binu was celebrating his birthday bash with other criminals when the party was gatecrashed by 100 Chennai police officers, who nabbed 76 of the rowdies in the next nine hours. A week later, Binu, who was being hotly pursued, surrendered before the Ambattur police in Chennai.

Following Binu’s surrender, several high-profile rowdies have surrendered to the police while a few others have been arrested.

‘Boxer’ Murali surrendered to the Vyasarpadi police station on February 15, while ‘Frog’ Prakash surrendered to the Teynampet police station on February 19.

Following their boss’ arrest, Binu’s close associates Saravanan, ‘Vicky’ Vignesh and ‘Kanaku’ Kanakaraj were arrested by the police at Sozhamedu on February 22.

Binu’s associates Mukesh and ‘Horse’ Venkatesh were arrested along with six contract rowdies in Velachery.

Binu’s arrest has also prompted his arch rivals to turn themselves in. Binu’s rival CD Mani’s drivers Hariharan and Ramkumar have also turned themselves in at the Teynampet police station.

Binu’s arch nemesis, ‘Arumbakkam’ Radhakrishnan surrendered to a court in Salem district on February 21. Following this, his associate ‘Arch’ Vinod also surrendered on the same day at Arumbakkam. Their junior rowdies Aladdin, Kuttiappan, Appanraj and Jayapratap were arrested by the special forces.

Binu, who has over 28 cases against him and had been absconding for two years was being welcomed back to Chennai by his friends and associates, with a party to celebrate his 47th birthday on February 6.

Around 200 criminals including henchmen and sub-bosses, who had cases ranging from murders, and abduction to extortion, were gathered at Velu Lorry Shed, a truck shop off the Outer Ring road.

A week after ‘Operation Birthday’, Binu surrendered to the Ambattur Police.

In his video confession to the police which was leaked to the media, Binu says he had gone underground for three years and hoped to reform himself. He went on to say that it was at his brother's insistence that he came out of hiding. "The Chennai police chased me wherever I went. That's why I directly came to surrender. I want to be forgiven this one time - I am not a big rowdy like you think," says Binu.
