A 47-year-old domestic help allegedly set herself on fire after having been accused of theft by her employer. The deceased, identified as Thangamani, was a resident of Ejipura and worked at the household of one Dr Sandhya, who operates a clinic in Bengaluru’s Koramangala area.

Two weeks ago, Dr Sandhya, a resident of Madiwala, had allegedly claimed that Thangamani stole a gold bracelet from her. Following this, Thangamani reportedly took her own life in the early hours of Saturday, at around 3.30 am. Her husband rushed her to Bowring Hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead. The postmortem is yet to be conducted.

Thangamani's husband, Gopi, has filed a complaint with the Viveknagar police, citing that it was abetment of suicide, because the employer had been mentally harassing his wife regarding the missing bracelet.

He further stated that in spite of the allegations made against her, Thangamani had continued going to work. On Friday, Dr Sandhya allegedly threatened to go to the police and file a complaint if the bracelet wasn’t returned. Following this, two men claiming to be police officials allegedly visited Thangamani at her residence on Friday night and questioned her. After this, Thangamani grew dejected, which led to take the extreme step, her husband alleged.

The deceased had reportedly been working in Dr Sandhya’s house for the past 12 years. Officials have taken the complaint from Thangamani’s husband but are yet to contact Dr Sandhya, whose phone has not been reachable.

Gopi works as a driver for a private company while Thangamani worked as a domestic help. The couple have three children.
