With hundreds of people stuck in floods in various parts of Chennai and north Tamil Nadu, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) was quick to make the hay while the sun shone.

The party has set up two helplines to help people in the affected areas. Although the numbers have been set up over a week after the crisis first began, the party appears to have received numerous calls.

The numbers started functioning from 6 pm on Monday. The party received about 3,500 calls until Tuesday morning from flood affected zones. Most of the calls were from Chennai, Thiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts.

A source from the party who did no wish to be named said, “Today morning we received a call from a family saying that they were caught in heavy floods in Perumbakkam. We immediately sent a team and rescued them within an hour.”

Once calls are made to the helpline, the party calls the district secretary of the areas concerned who head out to rescue victims with their teams.

In another instance, he said, “A person from Gandhi Nagar in Sholinganallur called and said that 300 people were on roads without food and shelter. The rescue team went and gave them food.”

Here are the two helpline numbers: 7810878108, 044-24320280
