In DMK’s ‘Game of Thrones’, Stalin is Jon Snow, Daenerys is Rahul Gandhi

Drawing a parallel between Cersei and TN CM Edappadi Palaniswami, the video clip accuses EPS of going a step further and joining hands with the ‘whitewalkers’.

The final season of the Game of Thrones is finally here. And the fact that the final season of the hit HBO show coincides with India’s Lok Sabha Election is not lost on many GoT fans in the country – including DMK supporters.

In a video clip released just days before Tamil Nadu goes to polls, DMK supporters have decided to pay tribute to the show by recapping for both fans and the uninitiated, the multiple plotlines of Game of Thrones. Of course, in analogies best understood by an audience in Tamil Nadu. The 2.59-minute video is being shared on WhatsApp.

“Before the story begins, several hundred years ago, in the north there were whitewalkers or zombies roaming,” begins the narrator. The video quickly cuts to picture of saffron flags, as the clip compares it to “India’s north – where there is a fascist government promoting caste fanaticism, religious fanaticism, and Hindi fanaticism.”

The clip goes on to compare the Night’s Watch, who are building a wall to prevent the whitewalkers from coming, to Dravidian leader and rationalist thinker Periyar – the obvious men dressed in black analogy being drawn. The narrator then moves to the present storyline, comparing the Seven Kingdoms in Game of Thrones to Tamil Nadu. “There’s Robert Baratheon and Ned Stark – both of them are friends. Like MGR and Karunanidhi,” points out the clip and then goes on to liken MGR’s successor Jayalalithaa to Cersei, Robert Baratheon’s wife.

Comparing the rivalry of DMK and AIADMK to the clash between Ned Stark and Cersei’s families, the clip then shifts to the death of Ned Stark, or Karunanidhi in DMK’s version of GoT.  Just as the late DMK patriarch, Ned Stark also has a large family and comparisons have been liberally drawn. Like Robb Stark, the eldest son of Ned, who loses his life “after taking many wrong decisions” the narrator points to Karunanidhi’s elder son Alagiri and his now “finished political career.”

In this version of Game of Thrones, DMK President MK Stalin is none other than Jon Snow, while Sansa is Kanimozhi and Arya is…wait for it...A Raja, who the narrator argues has emerged a warrior after being acquitted in the 2G case. Daenerys Targaryen, you guessed it, is Congress President Rahul Gandhi, with the whitewalker being Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to the clip. And while the clip informs viewers the Seven Kingdoms will be destroyed if the whitewalkers come, it notes that in Game of Thrones, Cersei chose not to take part in the battle against them. Pushing this reference further, the clip alleges, “But Edappadi Palaniswami has gone one level above and allied with the whitewalkers.” The AIADMK has allied with the BJP for the Lok Sabha Elections.

With its final analogy, the clip concludes, “Will Jon Snow and Daenerys save the Seven Kingdoms from whitewalkers? We will know on April 14. But will Stalin be able to save Tamil Nadu from Modi’s whitewalkers? You will have to decide on April 18.”
