Dhanush’s much anticipated Kollywood movie Jagame Thandhiram started streaming on OTT platform Netflix on June 18, Friday. In view of the pandemic, Jagame Thandhiram had to skip a theatrical release and opt for a digital premiere. But the makers managed to hold on to some traditional events and practices that take place prior to a movie’s first day, first show, and make it special for fans.

The producers organised a fan event titled ‘Kongas Kondatham’ on June 17, a day before the OTT release. And in Tamil Nadu's Theni, a group of men put together a giant cut out of Dhanush, as Suruli, sporting a mustache and sunglasses with guns firing.

Sharing a video of how the cutout was created, Netflix wrote, "#JagameThandhiram is releasing tomorrow. But, a First Day First Show without a cut-out ah? How possible it is?!! No problem, maapla. Dhanush Superfan PP Samy got your back (sic)." Directed by Karthik Subbaraj, Jagame Thandhiram stars Dhanush, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Joju George, Kalaiyarasan, Sharath Ravi and James Cosmo in prominent roles.

Dhanush will be playing a quirky, Madurai-based gangster named Suruli in the film. The movie’s plot tracks Suruli’s journey as he locks horns with a powerful UK-based gangster (played by James Cosmo). Ahead of the film’s release, actor Dhanush took to Twitter to thank Karthik Subbaraj for the character. He also extended his gratitude to the Jagame Thandhiram team. “Thank you @karthiksubbaraj for jagame thandiram and #suruli I loved every bit of working with you and playing the most notorious gangster #suruli every credit goes to you and your lovely team (sic),” Dhanush wrote on Thursday. In response to Dhanush’s tweet, director Karthik Subbaraj tweeted, “Same feelings here Thanks a lot for everything...if not for your perseverance #JagameThandhiram wouldn't have been possible. Feeling so lucky to have worked with an awesome performer & person like you.... Will always cherish the experience of bringing #Suruli to life.”

Dhanush has a number of movies in the pipeline including The Gray Man, Atrangi Re and Naane Varuven among others.
