The Delhi Daredevils was reportedly issued a warning by the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) anti-corruption unit (ACU) for inviting its cheerleaders to a celebrity golf tournament dinner in Gurgaon last Friday. The event was held in Gurgaon ahead of Delhi’s match against the Chennai Super Kings.

ACU issued a caution to ensure that cricketers representing the franchise remain protected from all outside sources barring the team and its existing officials.

TOI has since reported that the ACU hasn’t lodged a formal complaint with BCCI but the incident will be mentioned while preparing the feedback form for the IPL once the 2018 edition of the tournament is completed.

“These girls were invited. It was not that the cricketers were partying with these girls. The cheerleaders arrived, attended the dinner and left. However, the ACU has warned the team to ensure such a thing doesn’t happen again. Bringing cheer-girls to a party is banned as the ACU code doesn’t permit any outsider to get close to the players,” a top ACU official said on Monday.

Sources said that ACU officials had explained to all the franchises to not bring in cheerleaders for team dinners or maintain any personal interaction with them either. “Now that the team did it, ACU was alert enough to report the incident and briefed the team to avoid such situations in the future,” the official said.

Since then, the Daredevils management has denied any such activities. “The Daredevils don’t get cheerleaders to any of the private events. If the ACU officials are unhappy, they should talk to us,” a team source said.

In the past years, there has been no rule against players interacting with the cheerleaders and were allowed at post-match IPL parties. But since the shocking spot-fixing scandal rocked the richest T20 league in the world, the BCCI has become more cautious and has given the ACU the power to ensure a clean tournament would take place year on year.
