Image for representation purpose only/ Courtesy: Wikipedia Commons A debt-ridden sugarcane farmer from Pandavapura taluk in Mandya district committed suicide on Thursday by setting his field on fire and then walking into it, reported Prajavani. According to the villagers, 50-year-old Ningegowda had grown sugarcane on a half-acre land owned by him and had suffered loss due falling prices and sugar factories not buying the stock. Unable to repay the loan, Ningegowda took his own life. In the last few days, several farmers’ organisations have been protesting across the state demanding better price from sugar factories for the yield. Managements of the sugar mills, on the contrary, have argued that it was not possible to pay higher prices as the cost of production had increased and the price of sugar in the market was low. Sugarcane growers are now threatening the government that they will disrupt the legislature session at Suvarna Soudha in Belagavi scheduled to commence from June 29.Â
