The Tamil Nadu police are now probing the rape of a 15-year-old Dalit girl by her mill supervisor in Tiruppur. It is alleged that she was repeatedly raped by her boss at the mill where she was employed and the abuse came to light when the girl became pregnant, according to the Times of India.
The family of the survivor has now lodged a complaint. The girl is from the Andipatti district in Theni. The mill supervisor has been arrested.
Media reports state that the girl had dropped out of school two years ago and started working in Meghala Spinning Mill and was also suffering from a speech impairment.
"The family was promised a salary of 5,500 per month for the girl. The tout identified as Balsamy told the family that if the girl worked under the Sumangali scheme for three years, she would be paid 1.7 lakh at the end of the term which could be used for her marriage,'' the Times of India quotes the police as saying.
"Mani enticed her with mobile phone, new clothes and cinema outings. Soon, he began raping her, even though she protested," the police added.
It is also reported that the girl was intimidated into not revealing her plight. Her co-workers also refused to believe her account of abuse.
