Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami found himself at the receiving end of vitriol from several social media users, after he posted a photograph of himself with his wife, who is seen dressed in a sleeveless gown.

Since the photo was posted on social media on December 23, several male users have jumped to comment on it, assuming “responsibility” for telling Shami and his wife what is appropriate for women of the Muslim community.

While some users expressed doubt regarding Hasin Jahan's religion, some others felt that it was Shami’s moral responsibility to see to it that his wife follows what they termed as the Islamic way of life.

One user felt it was “shameful” for Shami to have posted such a picture. “Are you a true Muslim?” the user demanded.

Another user went on to explain why Shami must “cover his wife in Burkha,” because, he asserted, men are likely to respect a woman only when she covers herself.

“Sir, with due respect, this is not good. Why is your wife not wearing any proper dresses. I can see a lot of her skin. Please cover her," the user wrote.

However, it was not long before many users came forward to support the cricketer and give it back to the trolls. Soon, the comments in support of the couple outnumbered those lambasting them.

On Sunday, former Indian batsman Mohammad Kaif tweeted a screenshot of the comments, terming them "shameful."

Mohammed Shami then went on to post a few more photographs on Sunday, with his wife in the same attire, which received more support from social media users.
