An elderly couple, Jeyashri and Ashok are idly walking down Chennai’s Kambar Street, when a man, dressed in shorts and a t-shirt, runs and snatches the chain on Jeyashri’s neck, causing her to fall.

Jaishree tries to hold on to the chain, but fails. The snatcher drags her for a few seconds till he can get a hold of the chain, and makes a run for it. Siva, the snatcher and his accomplice had parked their bike in a nearby lane. The accomplice had kept the bike running, after which they sped away.

The incident occurred at around 5:30 pm on Sunday. However, the incident was caught on CCTV.

The police arrested Siva from Kundrathur on Monday, after his neighbours tipped off the cops.

“We got a tip off from people who identified the boy to be their neighbor. We immediately went to the place and arrested him at around 4 pm on Monday,” an investigating officer told TNM.

The incident came to light after CCTV footages of chain-snatching released by the police started doing the rounds.

In another video released by the Chennai police, Washermen resident Menaka can be seen being dragged by bike-riders, who snatched her 15 sovereign gold chain.

Speaking to the Hindu, Menaka said that she was on her way to a relative’s wedding on Sunday morning in Valluvar Nagar in Arumbakkam, when the incident occurred.

In the video, the pillion rider snatches Menaka’s chain, and she was allegedly dragged for another 100 mts. Menaka lost consciousness and was hospitalized. The culprits escape with their loot and the investigating officers of the case are on the lookout for the duo.
