Come March and it will be summer in Bengaluru. This is usually the time when residents have to face power cuts every year, both scheduled and unscheduled.

However, this year, Bengaluru residents could get some relief in the form of SMS alerts if the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) has its way.

Bescom plans to introduce an SMS-based alert system by March through which consumers will be intimated about planned and unplanned power cuts.

The timing of the move is significant considering that most power cuts happen during the summer months starting from March.

The reason for power cuts range from increased load to technical glitches in the power transmission system.

According to Bescom MD P Rajendra Cholan, the power utility has garnered mobile numbers of 90% of its consumers to initiate the move, as per a report in The Hindu.

The report adds that in order to make the initiative a success, Bescom is mapping its consumer base ward-wise as per the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) records.

“A software is being developed to send out bulk messages to consumers in case of outages. This will cover both scheduled and unscheduled power cuts. We called for tenders two months ago for the development of the software. We should be able to implement the system before March,” Cholan told The Hindu.
