Another case of violence against a student from North East India has occurred in Bengaluru. Higio Gungtey, a 22-year-old student of Christ College, who is from Arunachal Pradesh, was allegedly brutally assaulted on Monday by his house-owner, Hemanth Kumar. Kumar has since surrendered to the police.

According to Higio, around 5.00 pm on Monday, Kumar came to his third-floor apartment in Hulimavu and verbally abused him for using extra water. On the same day, around 7.00pm, the owner knocked on Higio’s door and brutally assaulted him for almost an hour.

“The owner was drunk I think, when he came into the house. He banged the door, locked it and without any reason, started beating me. He continued to beat me. It felt like hours. After that he removed his shoes and made me lick it. He then barged into my room, took the trolley and threw it out of the house,” Higio said.

Higio packed his bags and went to live with his friends that very night. His friends put him in touch with Mitching Rana, the president of the Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Association.

Higio was also taken to a private hospital for treatment, and on Wednesday, he wrote a detailed letter to DCP South East, Boralingaiah. After meeting the DCP, Higio filed a complaint on Thursday at the Hulimavu Police Station.

“After the complaint was filed, Hemanth Kumar surrendered. He is a lawyer and he is out on bail now. An FIR has been registered under sections 341, 323, 506 and 365 of the IPC,” DCP Boralingaiah said.

According to Rinni, President of Northeast Solidarity, three other girls, who were also residing in the building, intervened after hearing Higio’s screams.

“The girls are also from the North East. They intervened and got Higio out of there. After Higio’s incident came to light, the other residents of that building, also from the North East, said that they too were verbally abused by Hemanth Kumar on multiple occasions,” said Rinni.

After the incident, Hemanth allegedly threatened to hire goons and assault Higio and his friends if they complained to the police. “He has abused the people in the building multiple times and he keeps threatening us by saying he will hire goondas to beat us up if we did not comply with what he says. It’s dangerous. The three girls who helped me, I hope they get out of that building soon,” Higio said.

According to Rinni, although the complaint was filed on Thursday night, the police did not arrest Hemanth immediately.

“They knew his address and everything but they waited for him to come and surrender. He is a lawyer and he also told us that he would get away with this. What happened to Higio was atrocious. If the girls had not intervened, he would be dead by now,” she said.

Higio’s parents were informed of the incident and have are on their way to Bengaluru. “His father is coming to Bengaluru today (Saturday). They will meet the DCP and ask for stringent action to be taken,” Rinni added.

On December 26, 2016, a youngster from Mizoram was brutally beaten up by his house owner, who claimed to be a retired police officer.
