The mutilated body of an unidentified woman was found at the premises of the Erragadda Mental Hospital premises in Hyderabad on Thursday.

While the police found the body in some bushes, the woman’s legs were chopped off and found on the terrace of the Male Ward building.

Doctors at the institute said that they ran a thorough check after they discovered the body and stated that none of their patients were missing, which suggested that the woman was an outsider.

“After the body was found we have checked on all the patients and their attendants in our hospital. None of them are missing. The deceased is not one of our patients,”  Dr Uma Shanker, superintendent of Mental Hospital, was quoted as saying.

The SR Nagar police arrived at the spot with a forensic team and told reporters that it was possible that she was murdered elsewhere and her body was dumped at a secluded spot in the hospital's premises.

The SR Nagar police have booked a murder case and said that they are trying to identify the woman, who is estimated to be in her 40s.

The body was sent for an autopsy and the police will also look into any signs of sexual assault in the medical report. They are also going through CCTV footage.

It was also noticed that a portion of the hospital's compound wall had been demolished close to the crime scene, and many had encroached the land.

“Out of the 56 acres that the hospital complex is spread over, 10 acres has been encroached upon. People living there use the hospital premises as thoroughfare to reach the Erragadda main road,” a police official was quoted as saying.

The incident has once more highlighted the anti-social elements lurking in the city’s government hospitals.

Just last month, a woman was allegedly raped in a dark corridor of the state-run Osmania General Hospital (OGH) in Hyderabad by a 45-year-old ward attendant, who was later arrested by the police.

What was even more tragic, was that the woman had visited the hospital for treatment on the night of May 2, at around 9 pm, after her husband had allegedly thrashed her.
