Underworld don Chhota Rajan, who had fled the country more than two decades ago was arrested by a joint Australian and Bali police team on Sunday at Bali in Indonesia. A team of officials from CBI and Mumbai police will be travelling to Indonesia to process his deportation, after which he will be in the custody of the Mumbai police.

Chhota Rajan was said to be close to Indian Intelligence agencies in helping them out against Dawood Ibrahim, since India and Rajan had a common enemy in Dawood. After Rajan split from the D-Company, he was being used by India to keep a check on Dawood. So why was he arrested now, if he was indeed helping India? Here are the various theories doing the rounds.

Theory 1:

Top officials have told TOI that Chhota Rajan made some “serious errors” following which the agency wanted to arrest him. They said that the decision to arrest Rajan with the help of Interpol came with care and deliberation. It is also said that he might have “double-crossed” or withheld some crucial information, because of which Indians wanted him in custody.

Theory 2:

The other theory is that the Australians were not happy with Chhota Rajan’s presence in the country as assassinations were being plotted against him. Dawood’s man Shakeel has been consistently plotting to kill Rajan, and the Australian Government did not want any shootouts in their country. Rajan was staying in Australia for the last seven years under the identity of Mohan Kumar.

Theory 3:

Some believe that he might have been cornered after D-Company found him after years in April-May. Rajan was being hunted by Dawood Ibrahim’s main man Shakeel and was also invited him for a face-off. The report that Rajan was living in Australia was out in April and it created pressure on both Indian and Australian agencies to get him arrested, according to TOI report.

An official told TOI, “Till April, a handful of people in agencies knew that Rajan was in Australia. However, mid April, a person who handled his travel logistics and his cook, blew his cover. They tipped off Chhota Shakeel about his whereabouts.” This could have led to his arrest.

Theory 4:

Indian intelligence agencies were being criticized for alleged protection offered to Chhota Rajan. This could have put pressure on them to get him arrested to perhaps show that they were not hand-in-glove with the underworld don.

Theory 5:

Being the ‘patriotic don’ that he claimed to be and having ‘served his country’, perhaps it was time for the don to retire. Some believe that he could have cut a deal with the Indian police to get back to the safety of the country's jails.
