In yet another horrific crime, a 23-year-old man stabbed a 22-year-old woman in Chennai in broad daylight. According to local media reports, the man was allegedly enraged when the woman decided to break up with him.
The couple visited the Anna Nagar Tower Park on Tuesday afternoon and reportedly got into a heated argument.
According to police sources, the couple visited the park around 2 pm and were initially only talking. When the conversation escalated into a full-blown shouting match between the two, the man reportedly took out a knife and stabbed the woman.
When she fell unconscious, the man was unnerved and stabbed himself. The commotion and noise alarmed the walkers, joggers and visitors at the park and they immediately alerted security.
While the two are undergoing treatment at different hospitals in Anna Nagar, doctors at the private hospital in Anna Nagar, where the woman has been admitted, said that she needed to undergo surgery for her injuries.
Police sources said that the couple was sitting towards the back of the park when the incident took place. One police official said, “What we are unsure of is why he had a knife with him when the argument seemed to have taken place spontaneously. We are investigating.”
Police said the woman is a resident of Cholavaram and is pursuing a degree course in mathematics at a private college in Anna Nagar. She was in a relationship with Rajesh, also a resident of Cholavaram, who is working in Coimbatore after completing his BE in electrical engineering from a Chennai private college. The two reportedly studied in the same school and were in a relationship since Class 9.
In a similar incident that happened in Madurai last week, a 14-year-old girl was doused in kerosene and set on fire by a stalker, allegedly over a rejected proposal. The Class 9 student was returning home from school with her mother when 20-year-old Balamurugan set her on fire. He reportedly lived in the same neighbourhood as the girl. She suffered 60% burns and is fighting for her life in hospital.
