Around 29 passengers on board a bus belonging to Yellow Travels, a private travel agency, had a close shave after the bus caught fire on a National Highway in Andhra Pradesh as it was travelling from Hyderabad to Bengaluru.

The incident took place in the early hours of Thursday at around 3:45 am near Enugumarri village in Peapalli mandal in Kurnool district.  No casualties or injuries were reported.

Speaking to TNM, Maruti Shankar, Sub-Inspector from the Peapully Police Station said, "It was a bus belonging to Yellow Travels and 29 passengers were on board. No injuries were reported as the driver of the bus was alerted as soon as smoke was noticed at the rear end of the bus."

The bus was immediately stopped to the side and everyone got down from the vehicle even as the flames quickly spread and burnt the vehicle completely.

"Fire tenders reached the spot and doused the fire and a crane lifted the charred body of the vehicle and cleared the road. Some passengers went back to Hyderabad while the travels made arrangements for others to reach Bengaluru," the SI added.

While the reason for the fire is yet to be ascertained, police suspect that a technical issue may have led to the mishap. Further investigation is ongoing.

Last month, as many as 15 people were killed and three others were injured when a speeding bus crashed into a multi-utility vehicle (MUV) on the Hyderabad-Bengaluru National Highway near Veldurthi in Kurnool district.

The bus, belonging to SRS Travels, was on its way from Hyderabad to Bengaluru, collided with the vehicle coming from the opposite direction. According to the police, to save a two-wheeler rider, the bus driver had hit the road divider and crashed into the MUV in the opposite lane. The police suspected that the MUV was speeding, which may have led to the accident.
