In a horrific act of cruelty, a young couple in Bengaluru has been arrested for crushing their minor niece’s fingers using a pair of cutting pliers. The seven-year-old child, who studies in Class 2, lost her mother and since her father worked in Tumakuru, she stayed with her uncle and aunt. They crushed her fingers allegedly because she was not studying properly.

“After their arrest, the couple claimed that they did not have any ill feelings towards the victim and all they did was try to scare her into studying, by clamping her fingertips between a pair of cutting pliers. However, the damage had been done as the girl’s fingertips were bruised and had turned blue. The girl was unable to hold anything, even a pencil to do her homework. When her grandmother, who works as a housekeeping staff, returned home and saw the victim in tremendous pain and unable to use her hands, she rushed her to a hospital,” a police officer told Bangalore Mirror.

The police also told Bangalore Mirror that the couple allegedly used to beat the child often.

The incident came to light after the minor girl’s grandmother took her to the hospital where the administration filed a medico-legal case with the local police.

The police arrested the couple and booked them under the Juvenile Justice Act of 2015 and Section 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) of the Indian Penal Code.

Incidentally, the Registrar General of the Karnataka High Court in March had taken suo motu cognisance and had sent notices to the state government over the effective implementation of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015 following a Supreme Court directive.
