Close on the heels of TDP seeking to move against the NDA government in Parliament on Tuesday, the BJP has levelled allegations of phone tapping against the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) government. The BJP state president Kanna Lakshminarayana has alleged that his phone is being tapped by Andhra state government.

Recently, after meeting with Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Kanna said that the former has instructed the Intelligence Bureau (IB) to look into his complaint.

The BJP state president told the media, “The Union minister has asked the IB to conduct an enquiry into the issue. The TDP leaders maintain that to tap phones, the service provider needs permission from the Department of Telecommunications, which is under the purview of the Centre. But, the TDP government has purchased off-the-air equipment, which enables tapping phones without seeking any permission.”

Irked by Kanna’s allegations, ruling TDP has termed the row as diverting attention from the ongoing issue and discussion over Special Category Status.

Speaking to TNM, TDP official spokesperson Lanka Dinakar came down heavily on Kanna Laxminarayana. “This is just a drama staged by the BJP to divert the attention from the Special Category Status case. If they have any evidence of phone tapping, they must produce it.”

He further added that there is no question of phone tapping by the state government when Union Government looks after  the Department of Telecommunications.

Taking a dig at Kanna, the TDP spokesperson added, “He is an empty box. I do not know what kind of information he has, but he does not know anything, including  Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014."

PVN Madhav, BJP MLC, alleged that TDP government is using private players to tap the phones by using off-the-air technology.

Speaking to TNM, he said “Chandarababu Naidu once had the experience of getting caught in the Cash for Vote scam. He is using the same tactic and mechanism to tap our phones.”

He further alleged that, along with Kanna, phones of several other leaders are being tapped.

He says, "Nobody is spared. BJP, YSRCP and Jana Sena are under surveillance and phones of leaders are being tapped. Even their (TDP) leaders, who have defected from YSRCP, are under the radar.”
