Unable to bear the harassment by her boyfriend, a minor girl attempted suicide by setting herself ablaze in Bengaluru on Thursday. She succumbed to her injuries on Saturday at Victoria Hospital.
TOI reports that, Maya (name changed) was a school dropout. Her boyfriend, 21-year-old Pravin, who worked at an apparel showroom, kept forcing her to marry him. Maya lived with her parents, who are daily wage labourers.
Based on Maya’s statement before she succumbed to injured, Bengaluru police have arrested Pravin for abetting suicide, reported TOI.
According to TOI report, the fifteen-year-old girl, who was alone at home, poured kerosene over her body and set herself ablaze at her residence in Janata Nagar on Thursday.
Neighbours who heard the screams doused the fire and rushed her to Victoria hospital where she died three days later. Doctors said that Maya had suffered 90% burns and her condition was critical.
Speaking to the police on Friday, Maya alleged that Pravin threatened to reveal intimate photographs of hers if she didn’t agree to marry him.
"During the investigation, it was found that both of them were in a relationship for a long time and a few months ago, they had eloped and returned home after a few days. Pravin's parents approached her parents with a marriage proposal. But Maya's parents did not approve of the relationship. They told that they cannot get their daughter married, as she is a minor and also they did not like Pravin's conduct," said a senior police officer.
"Pravin's parents conveyed the message to him and he grew furious. He started threatening to reveal details about their relationship to everyone in the area. That's when Maya decided to kill herself," added the officer.
