A 9-year-old girl living with her grandmother in Vidyaranyapura area in north-Bengaluru was raped and sexually abused by her grandmother’s tenant, who has since been arrested.

The accused, 44-year-old man named Halim, who is a tailor in the city, has been sent to Parappana Agrahara jail after preliminary medical tests confirmed that he had sexually abused the girl, reported Bangalore Mirror.

The incident came to light when the girl’s mother, who lived and worked in a garment’s factory in Mumbai called Maya (name changed) on Sunday evening, reported BM.

Maya started to sob loudly and was apparently scared to talk to her mother. However, when her mother asked her why, Maya said she never wanted to stay at her grandmother’s house.

The victim’s mother along with Maya’s younger sister reached Bengaluru on Monday and learnt that the tenant, 44-year-old Halim, who had been staying in their house for seven years, had been sexually abusing Maya, reported BM.

According to the newspaper report, Maya alleged that when her grandmother was away from home to hospital for medical tests, Halim, the neighbour took her to his house, undressed her and sexually abused her, even as she screamed of pain. He allegedly threatened to kill the girl if she told anyone about the incident. Sunday was the first time he had raped her.

Maya’s mother filed a complaint at the police station. Maya’s mother was allegedly being forced by her brother to withdraw the complaint as it would adversely impact the girl.

However, the police refused to take back the complaint as an FIR had already been registered under the POCSO Act.
