The News Minute | February 12, 2015 | 3.01 pm ISTA Bengaluru-based company has re-created a small fraction of Dasa sahitya in animations. Dasa Sahitya, or Dasa literature, is the literature of the Bhakti movement comprising the works of many bhakti saint poets. VedAtma Animation Studios has created an animation of five dasa-padas or Dasa hymns, re-telling some of the stories contained in these poems. Managing Director of the studio Sukanya Srinivas said that the inspiration for the project came gradually, as a process that started in childhood. “My whole family, my parents, grandparents and even in-laws, they were all musicians, and the sang constantly,” she says. Therefore, it was only natural that she take up this idea. Asked why the dasa padas in particular, she says: “What is not there in the dasa padas? There is science, literature, culture… Purandara dasa alone composed 4.75 lakh dasa-padas, of which around 15,000 survive.” She added: “A very Kannada identity is associated with the Dasa sahitya. We wanted to take it to the world.”At present, VedAtma has put together five dasa-padas in animation form and released them on a DVD that is available with online retailers.  Begun a year ago, the animations alone took five months to complete. First, all the images were drawn by hand, and later re-created through software, Sukanya says. She says at the entire expenses for the project, around Rs 7 lakh, were borne by the firm itself, which normally undertakes design work for architecture and the like. She says that the project was for the development of Kannada culture and hoped that the Department of Kannada and Culture would step in with assistance. TweetFollow @thenewsminute
