A couple was found hanging in their home in Nelagatharanahalli in Peenya on Saturday, by neighbours checking on them after their toddler was heard persistently crying for a long time.

According to reports, 34-year-old Gangadhar and 28-year-old Veena may have ended their lives over a property dispute.

The New Indian Express reports that the police found a suicide note in which a relative was named. The suicide note also named a friend of Veena’s, over whom the couple had quarrelled, the report said.

The Peenya police have registered a case against the relative based on a complaint by Gangadhar's mother.

Though the police believe that the deaths took place on Friday night, the incident came to light on Saturday morning, when the couple’s one-and-a-half-year-old son’s cries alerted the neighbours.

At around 7 am, one of the neighbours Sarajamma, grew suspicious when the baby went unattended by the parents despite persistent his cries. She alerted another neighbour, and the two peeped into the house through a window, when their repeated calls to the couple did not get a response. Inside, they found the couple dead, reports The Times of India.

“We decided to peep through the window and found Gangadhar and his wife were hanging from the ceiling in their bedroom, and Raja sitting on the bed and crying,” Sarojamma told TOI.

The police also recovered an empty poison bottle in the house, reported TNIE, and suspect that Gangadhar may have forced Veena to consume poison and hanged her, before killing himself. The couple were found hanging from two ends of a rope, reports say.
