The incident took place on Tuesday at a roadside eatery where the three Manipuri students, Michael Haokip, Rocky Kipgen, and Ngamkholen Haokip, were eating. The three men had also come to the same eatery and soon began to heckle the students. “They said that we were eating Kannada food, and so we should know how to speak Kannada. We tried to ignore them, and replied in Hindi. They told us not to speak Hindi", said one of the students. Soon the men attacked the students.  The students filed a complaint with the Kothanur police station. While Rocky and Ngamkholen had sustained minor injuries, Michael sustained head injuries that required five stitches to the forehead, besides swelling on the back of the head and shoulder bruising.
