SS Rajamouli’s superhit movie Baahubali: The Conclusion was released in Chinese theatres on May 4 with huge expectations. Though the movie had a positive response on its opening day, it did not seem to be received well on the following days. The movie had a massive drop on May 7.
The movie, starring popular stars Prabhas and Anushka Shetty, grossed only around US $0.89 million on May 7, thereby taking its total collections to US $8.56 million (Rs 57.58 crore) in 4 theatrical days at the China box office. Based on this performance, it is predicted that the film’s collections will further drop in the coming days. Other superhit Indian films to be released in China ahead of Baahubali 2 are Aamir Khan’s Secret Superstar, Salman Khan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Irrfan Khan’s Hindi Medium.
In China, Baahubali 2 did not earn more than the opening day record set by Secret Superstar and Hindi Medium but it did outperform its prequel Baahubali: The Beginning’s lifetime business in one day. Trade analyst Ramesh Bala tweeted that the film had a blockbuster opening at US $2.85 million (Rs 19 crore).
The film was released across 18,000 screens and became the third highest opener in China for Indian films. Further it has been predicted that the coming days would be difficult for Baahubali as the Hollywood superhero mega movie Avengers: Infinity War is to release in China next week. Baahubali has less than a week to pull the crowds. Avengers: Infinity War is a serious threat to Baahubali as it is expected to have a dominant share in the market. Baahubali 2’s performance at the China box office is in total contrast to its performance in the Indian markets. In India this film was the first Rs 1,000 crore blockbuster at the box office.
