The News Minute | August 22, 2014 | 10.48 am IST Award-winning documentary ‘Katiyabaaz’ directed by Fahad Mustafa and Deepti Kakkar released across the country on Friday takes a deep look at the struggle for power developing across India. The 80-minute documentary which won the Best Investigative Film award at the 61st National Film Awards this year contrasts the demands of the poor for affordable and reliable electricity in Kanpur with the plight of the state-owned Kanpur Electricity Supply Company Ltd. The film which has been showcased in film festivals across the world since last year was shot by the filmmakers as they travelled around Kanpur, documenting how local people set up illegal power connections or (katiyas) for residents without electricity. The city faces such power shortage that even those who can afford it are provided only ten hours of electricity a day.
