Kaushik Kuanr was a 26-year-old driver who hailed from a small village near Bhubaneswar in Odisha and moved to Bengaluru, where he had worked as a driver for the past two years. However, even on a driver's measly salary, Kaushik managed to rent a fully furnished three bedroom house in the posh area of Whitefield in Bengaluru which was estimated to have a rent value of around Rs 40,000 per month. For the past two years, Kaushik was involved in making money by uploading hundreds of pornographic and rape video clips to various porn sites and social networking sites.The CBI on Thursday evening arrested Kaushik after tracing his IP address for uploading four video clips, including one, of a horrendous gang rape in Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh. What the CBI stumbled upon, however, baffled them. A search of Kaushik's house revealed that he had over 450 videos of violent rapes in his possession.This arrest sheds light on a large inter-state web of violent pornographic content and brutal rape recordings, that are being uploaded to various websites in a bid to mint money.Naavi Vijayshankar, a cyber crime expert tells The News Minute that, "The way this works is just like providing content to any other website. There are two ways in which the uploader could be paid. Either a one time payment in exchange for the video or payment based on the number of clicks the video gets."However, Vijayshankar feels that the one time payment is more likely in the case of these videos."Since the videos involve real people and not pornstars in a role, it's more valued. Though it is speculation, there are probably fixed rates for each video," he adds while saying that each video may fetch thousands of rupees.Though the discussion of pornography stays out of the public sphere in India, pornography markets still flourish in the country. This is based on the equation of demand and supply and the only reason for the latter is because of a high level of demand.It is likely that, it is this demand that gives birth to many more people like Kaushik, who see this as an opportunity to make money, not comprehending the legal and moral repercussions.Abhishek Goyal, a top cop in Bengaluru, is of the view that the uploading such rape videos is similar to any business, which needs to be curbed soon."The CBI will have to track the source of the videos and how Kaushik got the videos in the first place. There is also a high probability that there are accomplices involved," he tells TNM.A report in the Mainstream Weekly, talks about how the Indian state is a mute spectator to the entire process of pornography and rape and how the real cause thrives due to the masculine nature of the country's patriarchal society.Activist Sunitha Krishnan, founder of the anti-trafficking NGO Prajwala is responsible for the movement that led to a CBI enquiry into the various videos being uploaded and circulated on social media and whatsapp groups."The first two arrests were from Odisha and Kaushik is also from Odisha. The CBI is also currently looking at another case right now that occured in Konark. It seems too much to call it co-incidence," she saysThe CBI had on March 23, arrested Kalia Sahoo alias Subrat Sahoo who was part of one of the videos from Bhubaneswar."If one were to connect the dots, many of the videos are uploaded from Odisha even if the rape was not committed in the state," Sunitha adds, hinting that there could be a possibility that there was an underground ring that dealt with rape videos.Though more details are yet to emerge on the incident, with the CBI to soon produce Kaushik before the magistrate in Sitapur and seek police custody, this incident cannot be brushed aside, as it could be instrumental in tracing the source of the thriving underground business and strike the beast at its belly.
