A four-day–old baby allegedly died of ant bites at the Old Government Hospital in Vijayawada on Monday.

Deccan Chronicle reported:

There were injury marks on the baby’s body and family members said that the infant had died of ant bites. There was tension in the area as relatives and leaders of political parties staged a protest, alleging negligence of hospital staff as the reason behind the baby’s death.

Some relatives also alleged that a saline bottle had fallen on the infant, injuring him.

However, hospital authorities have denied the family's allegations. Speaking to TNM, Superintendent of the hospital, Dr Jagan Mohan said:

The baby was born on April 29 in a critical condition, as the mother was suffering from abruptio placentae. The doctors tried their best to revive the baby, but yesterday morning, the baby's health suddenly started deteriorating and the baby died. After burying the baby, the family and a few others came to the hospital and started fighting with the hospital staff. A few of them were even drunk.

State health minister Kamineni Srinivas has now ordered an enquiry into the incident.

The shocking incident comes less than a year after a 10-day-old baby died after being bitten by rats in the ICU of the Government General Hospital in Guntur.
