The Andhra Pradesh government on Monday said that it decided to announce holidays to all schools from June 19 to June 21, in view of the rising temperature in the state.

Speaking to reporters, state Human Resources Development (HRD) Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao said that officials considered the heat-wave like conditions across the state, before taking the decision.

The order, issued by special chief secretary Adityanath Das, would apply to both private and corporate schools would remain closed.

The decision was taken after several reports suggested that students were suffering from sunstrokes and unable to attend class.

On Sunday, Visakhapatnam witnessed a temperature of 41.4 degree Celsius, even as areas like Kakinada and Rajahmundry continued to sizzle.

The Indian Meterological Department (IMD) said that the maximum temperatures in coastal Andhra Pradesh was likely to be around 40 to 42 degree Celsius which is 3 to 4 degree Celsius above normal.

It also put out a 3-day warning. However, it also said that thunderstorms accompanied with gusty winds were also very likely to occur over the state's Rayaseema region.

The IMD declares an official 'heat wave', if there is a deviation of more than 5 degree Celsius from the expected maximum temperature, and if this weather persists for two or three days.

The IMD had in February warned that the pre-monsoon months this year -- March, April and May -- will be warmer than normal and the heat wave will hit 16 states, apart from Delhi, due to various reasons.

According to the IMD, the core heat wave regions for April, May and June will be Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Orissa and Telangana and the meteorological subdivisions of Marathwada, Vidarbha, Madhya Maharashtra and coastal Andhra Pradesh.
