Senior citizens over the age of sixty can now travel for free in non-air conditioned government buses in Chennai from February 24 as per Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's latest scheme.

The Hindu reports that the scheme would be implemented on a pilot basis in Chennai and would be expanded after studying the response. Those over sixty years could apply for ID cards and tokens at designated bus depots.

Information on designated depots will be listed on the Transport Department website and forms will be available to avail the benefit. There will be no deadline for applications and commuters can avail tokens for a free ride whenever necessary. A total of ten tokens would be issued every month to an individual. The commuter can give these tokens to the bus conductor and travel for free.

Making a statement under rule 110 at the Tamil Nadu Assembly, she said that with the implementation of this scheme, the AIADMK government had fulfilled all the promises the party made in the 2011 election manifesto.
