A 27-year-old alumnus of a private engineering college, Madhukumar, self-immolated in front of the college in Semmanchery on Tuesday, reportedly after an argument with the management when he went to collect his certificates.

Sources say that after the argument with the management, he used the petrol from his bike and set himself on fire around 11:30 am.

He was rushed to the Government Kilpuak Medical College and Hospital by a passerby. Dr Narayana Babu of KMC told The New Indian Express that the man has suffered from 74 per cent burns and said that it was too early to comment on his condition.

According to the Semmenchery police, Madhukumar had done his MCA at the college between 2011-2014 but had a poor academic record.

He discontinued his studies in 2013 but somehow managed to finish his course this year and had come to collect his certificates.

Police said that his brother told them that he was unhappy with his poor academics and was also short-tempered.
