Jet Airways suspending operations has definitely come as a boon to other airlines, despite the slowdown. At least that is the conclusion you would draw from the winter schedule for weekly flights announced by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Almost every airline will be operating more flights this year per week beginning October 27, 2019 till March 27, 2020, as compared to last year.

According to the schedule released by DGCA, a total of 23,403 flights will take off from 103 airports in the country each week during this six-month period. This is an annual exercise where the airlines submit their schedules every six months and the DGCA then looks at the various aspects, airports, parking slots etc. and then officially announce the schedule. This figure is 23,403 flights is up from the 23,117 flights that took off last year.

IndiGo has the lion’s share of 10,310 flights per week. Air India, the national carrier that the government is trying to sell off, will have its 2,254 flights departing per week while SpiceJet will occupy the second spot after Indigo with 4,316 flights. Interestingly, each one of these carriers will see a jump in the number of flights they had operated during the same six-month period last year, 2018-19. SpiceJet’s number will jump by a whopping 46%, while IndiGo’s numbers will go up by 14.2%. Air India’s gain this year over last year is 17.6%. Two more carriers, GoAir and Vistara will also be operating their flights and their departures per week will be 2,308 and 1,376 respectively.

If you count Jet Airways out, the incremental number of flights being operated this winter will be close to 20% more than last year.

Jet used to have around 3200 take-offs each week and closed down its operations in April this year. Though there are parleys going on for a possible takeover of the airline by a South American airline group, it is not certain if the new management can resume flight operations before March 2020.
