Delhi Police have arrested Dr. Kamal Vedi of the skin and allergy department at AIIMS on charges of abetment of suicide and under sections of dowry act pertaining to mental and physical torture. The arrest came after the accused’s wife, Dr. Priya Vedi, a senior resident also at AIIMS had committed suicide on Sunday in a hotel in Delhi after posting a note on Facebook.According to sources in the Delhi Police, the victim’s parents have told the authorities that the victim “was depressed after she came to know her husband was a closet gay”. Her parents have also told the police that the victim, from Jaipur, “had tried to commit suicide 15 days prior to her death as well, but failed”. The police have also held her father-in-law for questioning and have taken Dr. Vedi’s mobile phone and laptop for forensic examination. Sources say that the victim had a fight with Vedi on Saturday after which she checked into Presidency Hotel in Paharganj at around midnight where she is alleged to have committed suicide. A preliminary probe says that when cops entered her room she was found with her wrists slashed. Sources also say that she was on a drip and that the police suspect she had put a heavy dosage of sleeping pills in the solution.In her Facebook post on Saturday night, the victim had written that her husband had lied about his sexuality before marrying her and that it had caused her depression. In her note which contains other personal details, she says that she had taken to Vedi and that she was “just a wife tag for him”. She also wrote that a month back he had accepted that he was not straight but she still decided to stand by him. She adds though that Vedi had put her through a lot of mental torture even after this and says that “if someone in our society is like him please don’t marry a girl to save yourself”.
