You may have seen an advertisement on Malayalam television channels recently, featuring Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan praising the brand new Kannur International Airport, and inviting everyone to its inauguration on 9 December.

Now, singer, producer and director Vineeth Sreenivasan has released a deeply emotional and melodious song about the newly opened airport and the state’s dreams for it, a few days ahead of the airport’s opening.

Titled Aakashapakshi Chekeruvan, the video, posted on YouTube by Kannur International Airport, shows a beaming Vineeth Sreevinasan in a blue shirt recording the song in a studio, making passionate hand gestures and facial expressions as he sings soulfully. The 1 minute 40 second long Kannur International Airport theme song exhorts a bird (a metaphor for the new airport and its planes) to carry the state’s hopes on its chest and flap its wings as it flies into the sky. As the instrumentation reaches a rousing crescendo, it urges the airport to take the state of Kerala to greater and greater heights.

The video posted on YouTube promises that an official music video for this song will be shared on December 9, when the Kannur International Airport opens in earnest.

The fourth international airport to be opened in Kerala, the Kannur airport saw its first trial flight passenger landing on September 20 this year. It spreads over 2300 acres of land, and its terminal building, measuring 95,000 sq m, is the largest in the country. The new airport is expected to be particularly useful for Keralites working in the Middle East, and will offer ease access to tourist destinations like Coorg, Mysuru, Kasargod and Wayanad. Domestic destinations connected by this airport include Delhi, Chennai, Goa, Bengaluru, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram and Ghaziabad.
