Following weeks of protests, sit-ins and total boycott of classes by students and teachers of the University of Hyderabad (UoH), a faculty member Appa Rao Pondile was appointed as the new vice-chancellor of the varsity for the next five years.

This decision succeeds weeks of turmoil on the university campus, with students demanding the resignation of R P Sharma, who was the incharge vice-chancellor since May this year.

The students and teachers were also opposing the presence of police on the campus and other decisions taken by Sharma including the alleged raid on a teacher's house after a verbal complaint.

"Since Rao has been a witness to the turmoil on the cam pus, we hope he will solve all security-related issues," K Laxminarayana, president of University of Hyderabad Teachers Association told Times of India.

Appa Rao has done his Masters in Science and has a PhD from Sardar Patel University . He is a post-doctoral fellow from the Institute of Botany, Academia Sinica, and Taipei, the report adds.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, the new Vice Chancellor said “I will try to preempt embarrassing situations for the university by having open and regular interactions with students as well as the staff. I know almost every teaching and non-teaching staff there by name. This will be an advantage for me.”
