The devastating cyclone Titli, which hit north coastal Andhra Pradesh last week, has affected over 12 lakh people, impacting their daily lives.
As the state struggles to rebuild itself, Telugu actor Vijay Deverakonda has donated Rs 5 lakh to the Chief Minister’s relief fund. “The news just reached me in Leh. This time it's our own. Let's join in. Every contribution is massive,” he tweeted, attaching a screenshot of his contribution.
Vijay, who is currently vacationing in Leh, also urged people to come forward and donate to the state, as they did during the Kerala floods. “You did it last time with me for Kerala, let's do it one more time. I stand with you Andhra Pradesh and so will a lot of my people,” he added.
Titli hit the state on October 11, leaving eight people dead and affecting 872 villages. According to a report filed by the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA), 18 mandals in Srikakulam have been affected and several areas still remain flooded. Heavy rainfall and wind have damaged 290 km of road and created 65 traffic disruptions, of which 55 were promptly cleared, the report said. Power supply in over 4,000 villages has been affected after several electric poles were uprooted. Almost 9,000 houses have been damaged in the storm.
The state government has made a tentative estimation of the damage across sectors at Rs 2,800 crore. Chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking assistance from the Centre worth Rs 1,200 crore as interim relief for rehabilitation of the affected areas.
“The cyclone Titli has devastated these districts (Srikakulam and Vizianagaram) and has left huge damage to properties, agriculture and horticulture crops, houses and infrastructure resulting in deep distress and misery to the people of these districts,” he said in the letter.
