Telugu actor-comedian Balireddy Prudhvi Raj, state secretary of YSR Congress party, was appointed as chairman and director of devotional channel Sri Venkateshwara Bhakti Channel (SVBC) run by Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD), on Sunday.

The post, previously occupied by veteran director K Raghavendra Rao, was lying vacant after he quit.

Prudhvi had joined the YSRCP in 2018. He even accompanied Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy in his Praja Sankalpa Yatra in West Godavari district.

Before joining the party, he had strongly criticised the TDP. Subsequently, he was appointed as the state secretary of the YSRCP.

Speaking to NTV, Prudhvi Raj said, "I will make the channel as popular as my dialogue '30 years industry'. We are making several programmes for the devotees with Annamayya songs. There are more than 2,000 songs."

’30 years industry’ is a popular dialogue from the film Khadgam which later became synonymous with the actor.

Stating that there shouldn't be any comparisons with the former director, he said, "There shouldn't be any comparisons with Raghavendra Rao, who has directed more than 150 films. I will try my best with the blessings of god."

He said he never imagined that he would be offered this post.

Further, he made a controversial statement urging the people to not vote for actors-turned politicians. “I have made a slogan: Do not trust cinema actors and vote for them. That golden era ended with NTR, MGR and Jayalalitha.”

Defending his remarks, he said, “What do cinema people do except waving hands, but I am with the people among them.”
