The Telugu remake of the Tamil film 96 which stars Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha, is nearing completion stages. According to the director, Prem Kumar, shooting will be wrapped up in a few more weeks.

Prem Kumar, who directed the original is wielding the megaphone for the remake as well. Speaking to Silverscreen, the director stated that the film title, which has not yet been decided, would be finalised after shooting is wrapped up.

The Telugu version of 96 will have Sharwanand and Samantha Akkineni playing the lead pair. Govind Vasantha, who had composed music for the original, has been retained for the Telugu version as well. According to the director, finalising the playlist of songs that the female lead sings in the movie was very tough. Finally, it was sorted out with Seetharama Sastry brought in. “Now, noted poet-lyricist Seetharama Sastry is writing the lyrics because everyone felt he would be able to lend the songs the depth they need,” said the film’s director.

The shooting of the talkie portions were completed in Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam and a song sequence was shot in the picturesque locations of Maldives and Kenya. On choosing the locations, the director had said in the interview, “Since the Telugu version is set in Vizag, which I am not familiar with, I scouted for a couple of months before zeroing in on certain locales.”

96 was remade in Kannada with Bhavana and Ganesh playing the lead roles. The Kannada remake was titled 99 as opposed to 96, and was directed by Preetam Gubbi. 99 was noted music director Arjun Janya’s 100th and its cinematography was handled by Santhosh Rai Pathaje. The film was bankrolled under the banner Ramu Enterprises.
