In a remarkable achievement, a 95-year-old man from Visakhapatnam has won the silver medal in the 10 km race walk event at the ongoing World Masters Athletics Championship 2018 at Malaga, Spain.

Super senior naval veteran Cdr Sriramulu bagged silver in the 90-95 age group. He finished the race in 1 hour 27 minutes on the Mediterranean coast earlier this week.

An official spokesperson of the Indian Navy announced Cdr Sriramulu's feat on Tuesday.

The 23rd Edition of the World Athletics Championship is being held at Malaga Athletics Stadium, Spain from September 4 to September 15.

Winning medals is not something new to Cdr Sriramulu. In 2016, he had won three gold medals in 5 kms, 10 kms and 20 kms race walk events in the 90-95 age group at the World Masters Athletics Championships held at Perth, Australia.

After getting the ‘World Champion Title’ by winning three races in Australia, he was declared Athlete of Asia in 2016 for his performance.

Sharing his daily routine, Cdr Sriramulu had said, “Over the last 6 years, my routine has been fixed: I wake up at 2.00am and drink ginger lemon tea. At 3.45am, I start off to the Beach Road and walk till 6 or 7am to practise for my 20km walk. Then after reaching home, I have breakfast at 8.30am. It’s usually something light like eggs or idlis. This is followed by lunch at 12.30pm. For lunch, I only have curd rice and take spoonful of servings of curries and a little dal. I do not have dinner, I just have a glass of buttermilk at about 6pm and go to bed by 8.30pm.”

The World Masters Athletics Championships is a biennial event that started in 1975. It is held under the auspices of World Masters Athletics, formerly called the World Association of Veteran Athletes.

Cdr Sriramulu has bagged nearly 100 medals in national and international level athletics competitions.
