Over 80 homes were gutted near the Besant Nagar beach in Chennai when a fire broke out at 2am on Wednesday morning.

The cause of the fire remains unknown. The fire spread quick as families rushed out of their homes, losing all their belongings. No casualties or injuries have been reported so far.

“An area of 10,000 sq ft has almost been flattened to the ground. So far, the BJP has provided Rs.1,000 to each family and a kit of a saree, dhoti, blanket and 10kg rice has been distributed by the government to the affected families,” says Ramaiah Ariya, a social worker.

Electricity has been badly hit and while one half of the families have been housed under a tent, another half has been housed in a room in a corporation school.

There was however no transparency of the list of those affected. Until the minister had arrived, there was no way private parties and NGOs were able to access it to provide immediate relief.

Rehabilitation efforts are underway and the larger concern remains the housing the affected.
