Sleuths from the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PC&PNDT) cell of Tamil Nadu police arrested three persons for running an illegal scan and abortion centre in Tiruvannamalai. The police also sealed a mansion worth Rs 3 crore built by the accused and used for running the centre.

Anandi, her husband K Tamilselvan and auto driver Sivakumar were arrested by the police from Vengikal in Tiruvannamalai district on Saturday night. Anandi, who is the prime accused in the case, was earlier arrested twice for the same crime in the last six years. She was last caught for illegal sex determination in 2016 but was out on bail

According to news reports, the Tamil Nadu health department officers set up a plan to trap Anandi on Saturday, when she was caught red-handed for revealing the sex of the foetus to the pregnant woman.

According to the Tiruvannamalai police, Anandi, a class 8 dropout, has been engaged in this business for quite some time now and there have been repeated complaints of sex determination and abortion services against her. While Anandi’s husband Tamilselvan, an employee with the Tamil Nadu Housing Board in Chennai, helped her in the business, Sivakumar brought her customers from Tiruvannamalai bus stand and dropped them back after the scan was over. Anandi was also found using an ultrasound machine worth Rs 7 lakh.

The police told the Times of India that Anandi charges Rs 6,000 per scan and at least six women avail of her services every day. The police also said that they will investigate as to how she got her hands on expensive machines and whether there is a bigger gang behind this.
