24-yr-old Hyd woman kills self, parents allege harassment for money by husband

Suresh allegedly tortured the woman to avail money through the government’s Kalyana Lakshmi scheme, which provides Rs 1 lakh towards marriage for women from poor families.

A 24-year-old woman from Hyderabad ended her life on Friday morning after she was allegedly tortured continuously by her husband to avail money through the government’s Kalyana Lakshmi scheme. Mamata, who married 29-year-old Suresh on May 26 this year, was an engineering graduate and lived with her husband, his mother and sister at Western Colony in Narsingi in the outskirts of the city.

According to a complaint filed by Mamata’s parents on Saturday, at the time of the wedding, they gave a sum of Rs 65,000 as dowry to Suresh, who works at a printing press, and his family. However, soon after the wedding, they say Suresh started harassing Mamata to avail money through the Kalyana Laskhmi programme, a welfare scheme under which the government provides Rs 1 lakh towards marriage for women over 18 from poor families.

The scheme can be availed by women who have completed 18 years of age, belong to the marginalised communities of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Minorities and Backward Castes, with the combined income of parents not exceeding Rs 2 lakh per annum.

According to police officials at the Narsingi police station, Mamata’s parents, who hail from Nizamabad, were hesitant to apply for the scheme as they are illiterate. “They were eligible to avail money through the scheme, but couldn’t complete the formalities as they are illiterate. However, unable to bear harassment from Suresh they filed an application in the beginning of September,” Tirupathi, an official at the police station, told TNM.

He also added that Mamata shared an amicable relationship with Suresh’s mother and sister but was ignored by Suresh who used to barely talk to her at home. “He would also treat Mamata’s parents the same way whenever they visited the couple. After her parents informed him that they were yet to apply for the Kalyana Lakshmi scheme, he began torturing her mentally and physically,” the police official said.

Following the complaint from Mamata’s parents, the police registered a case against Suresh on Saturday for abetment to suicide, and harassment. The accused has been arrested and sent on judicial remand, the police said.
