10-yr-old abused in Kerala theatre: BJP says accused close to CPI(M), Left hits back

Even as Kerala comes to terms with the horrific case of the sexual abuse of a 10-year-old child inside a cinema theatre in Malappuram in Kerala, an insensitive slugfest is on between the BJP and CPI(M) over the case. While the state BJP chief is pointing fingers at the CPI(M) in an ill-timed tirade, the CPI(M) has blamed the BJP for politicising the crime.

BJP State President Kummanam Rajasekharan tweeted on Monday that the main accused, identified as Moideen Kutty, is a close associate of local CPI(M) leaders, and also a fundraiser for the party.

But the CPI(M) has refuted the allegations, saying that Kummanam’s claims are baseless.

“The allegations are politically motivated; they don’t even have the remotest relation with the truth. The accused is in no way related to the party, and he never raised funds for us. It is simply the BJP’s trend to throw mud on the CPI(M) and now they are doing the same on social media,” EN Mohandas, Malappuram district secretary of CPI(M), told TNM.

However, he added, “The people of the state are informed enough to understand these allegations are baseless. With all the untrue allegation levelled against it, the party would have ceased to exist.”

Kummanam also alleged that Moideen had taken part in a protest against the brutal gangrape of a child in Jammu’s Kathua.

“He shed crocodile tears in the name of Kathua case when he was indulging the gruesome crime. Moideen represents the new age communism,’ the tweet alleges.

Soon social media was abuzz with photos of a protest, in which a person, allegedly Moideen Kutty, can be seen. In the photo, some persons carrying a banner saying ‘Justice for the victim’ can be seen, but it is unclear where the protest took place or who organised the protest.

It cannot be confirmed if the person in the photo is indeed Moideen, but that hasn’t stopped scores of people from sharing the photo on social media.

Meanwhile, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) set-up to probe the case said that the girl and her mother were waiting for a bus at Thrithala, to go to the mother's house in Malappuram.

"At this time, Moideen happened to see them and he took them in his car to Malappuram. On the way, they got down at this theatre in Edappal," DySP Shaji said.

According to the police, Moideen owns several commercial and residential buildings in Thrithala that he has rented out.

Sources also claim that Moideen has a jewelry dealership in Abu Dhabi.

Late on Sunday the mother of the girl was also arrested for allowing the accused to sexually abuse her daughter. It was on Saturday that the shocking incident was exposed through media reports.
