Last Friday, the three time Chief Minister of Nagaland, Neiphiu Rio quit from his office. Rio has been the Chief Minister of the state for than 11 years now. The resignation came after he had a landslide victory in the Lok Sabha polls. He also resigned from the state assembly of Nagaland. The Chief Minister's resignation came because Rio has been aspiring to get into the central cabinet for some time now. But all his hopes were quashed when the National Democratic Front announced the list of its "small and compact" cabinet.
Rio, who belongs to the Naga People's Front, had openly announced during his campaign that he wanted to go to New Delhi to play a bigger and important role for the "Naga people and the North East region". But the present cabinet's North Eastern representation was restricted to Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. The two ministers who were given entry to the cabinet are Sarbanadna Sonowal and Kiren Rijiju. The fact that Nagaland has only one seat in the Lok Sabha worked against Rio, along with the Bharatiya Janata Party's single-handed victory in the polls.
Sonowal who led the party to gain 7 seats out of the 14 in Assam was credited with a portfolio.
Rio defeated his Congress rival K.V. Pusa by 4,00,225 votes in the recent Lok Sabha polls, a relatively high margin. Rio who was in his third term in office, had four more years in his Chief Minister's term. Reports suggest that he is hopeful that his name will find a place when the cabinet expansion is taking place. Times of India has reported that Rio's party and others in Nagaland are hope.
