“The story is horrifyingly familiar.”

The Orlando gay club shooting is the worst attack on the LGBTQ community on record, a tragic interruption to the celebration of Pride Month in the US and elsewhere.

What is the significance of the attack on a gay club? What role have clubs like Pulse, where the attack took place, played and continue to play in the LGBTQ movement?

This Vox video maps the journey from the Stonewall riots in 1960s New York to the current day, and shows how battle lines have been drawn around these clubs as safe spaces that provided a welcoming place from which to deal with an atmosphere of pervasive homophobia. Understanding what safe spaces mean to the LGBTQ movement puts the Orlando shooting in a new fresh perspective, focusing not just on the loss of lives but the loss of safe space as well.
