Shruti Haasan will be seen in the title role in the upcoming film Sangamithra. The first look of this big budget film was released at the Cannes International Film Festival and it went viral on the net immediately thereafter. In the first look, the actor is seen atop a horse wielding a sword. According to reports, she plays a warrior princess trying to save her kingdom. Apparently, Shruti will have quite a lot of action sequences in the period film.

Set in the 8th century AD, Sangamithra is directed by Sundar C. The director, well known for rom-coms, will be donning the director’s robes for a historical film for the first time in his career. Apart from Shruti in the lead role, the film also has Arya and Jayam Ravi in the star cast. Oscar winning music composer AR Rahman is on board to compose music for this film. S. Thirunavukarasu has been roped in to crank the camera. Shruti is excited to star in the project and has said that it would be the most challenging role in her career.

Sangamithra is produced by N Ramasamy under his banner Thenandal Studios Limited. It is touted to be one of the most expensive films to be ever made and the producers have earmarked a humongous budget of Rs. 400 crores. The shooting of this film will begin soon after the team returns from the Cannes International Film Festival.

Sundar C, a well-established director, has several hits and critically acclaimed films to his credit including Arunachalam, Anbe Sivam, Ullathai Alli Thaa, Aranmanai and Kalakalappu. Shruti Haasan, on the other hand, is busy with the Bollywood film Behen Hogi Teri and is also a part of Subaash Naidu, which has her legendary dad Kamal Haasan playing the lead role apart from directing it.
