It’s been a highly charged 16 hours in Tamil Nadu politics, and the woman in the middle of the storm is VK Sasikala, general secretary and Legislature Party leader of the AIADMK. Amidst allegations from O Panneerselvam that he was forced by her to resign as the Chief Minister, Sasikala gave him a detailed, acerbic response at the party HQ on Wednesday

“When Amma died, I gave him an opportunity to be CM, because Amma gave him several opportunities,” Sasikala said, in an open display of authority.

Repeatedly calling OPS a betrayer, Sasikala said, “For so many days, he did not have any revelations to make. It is only because he is part of the DMK’s conspiracy that he’s saying these things now.”

Sasikala was addressing the MLAs of AIADMK in a meeting at the party headquarters, most of whom seem to have given their support to Sasikala in her battle with OPS. Insisting that she was walking on the path shown by late Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, Sasikala said that OPS’s betrayal was clear on several occasions.

“I first suspected it when Durai Murugan (DMK leader) praised him in the Assembly, and OPS remained mute,” Sasikala said, referring the Deputy Leader of Opposition’s comment that he wanted OPS to complete his five year term.

In the early hours of Wednesday, Sasikala had spoken about another ‘evidence’ of OPS’s alleged defection. “During the Assembly session, he smiled at the DMK working president in the House,” she had said.

Panneerselvam for his part has denied the allegations of a conspiracy in an interview to TNM. He also told media persons, “Smiling is not a crime.”

In turn, Sasikala has slammed Panneerselvam’s allegation that he was not informed about Sunday’s legislative body meeting where Sasikala was named Legislature Party head. “Details of the meeting were being reported in the media. No one will believe Panneerselvam when he claims he didn’t know about it,” she said.

The battle between OPS and Sasikala are being fought on many fronts, and this war of words is what the public gets to see. But neither OPS, nor Sasikala, is willing to let go first.

“AIADMK is not afraid. And nor am I,” said Sasikala, clearly daring OPS.
