Putting an end to all speculation, senior leader MM Hassan has been appointed as the interim president of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee.

The High Command’s decision appointing Hassan as the KPCC head came in the evening. Hassan is the senior among the KPCC vice-presidents and a prominent leader of the A group headed by former chief minister Oommen Chandy. Through the move, the High Command has apparently tried to please Oommen Chandy who was firm in his stand of not taking up any official posts.

Hassan is a nominee of Chandy and the High Command’s decision would give him an upper hand in the party. It was the adamant attitude of Chandy that prompted the party leadership to opt for someone else. Chandy has been upset over the fact that the A group doesn’t possess any of the plum posts in the party. He was also irked after the A group scored less in the recent selection to the post of District Congress Committee presidents.

The I group’s nominee was MLA VD Satheesan who is also a vice president of KPCC. I group is headed by opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala. Only a couple of days ago, the High Command began discussions with the state leaders in this regard. AICC general secretary Mukul Wasnik who is in charge of Kerala spoke with Ommen Chandy and Ramesh Chennithala on Wednesday. “The appointment is till the organizational election. At present it’s not possible to say when the election would happen,” senior leader KV Thomas told The News Minute.
