Robbers usually find creative ways of carrying out their criminal deeds – but this group of men in Chennai decided to go movie style while robbing a jewellery story in Kolathur.
The inspector of Rajamangalam police station told TNM that the robbers rented the first floor of Mahalakshmi Jewellery in Kolathur about 10 days ago. The men hailed from north India and the owner of the place had not taken any details from them. They had claimed that they would be opening a shop there soon.
Except, what they were really doing was to drill a hole through their floor – which is the roof of the jewellery store.
On Thursday, when the owner of the jewellery story had gone out for lunch, the robbers set their plan in motion. They jumped into the shop through the roof between 1pm and 3pm, and made off with 3.5 kg of gold jewellery, 4 kg silver jewellery and Rs 2 lakh cash.
In fact, they didn’t even carry their loot out in suitcases – CCTV footage released by the police show two men carrying what look like polythene garbage bags and a gunny bag! Reportedly, the men had taken all the jewellery cases from the shop, emptied them into these bags and left around 2.41pm.
Rajamangalam police said that investigation is in process and till now, they have not arrested anyone in the case.
Police to use mobile app to find suspects
After testing face detection software in CCTV cameras, Chennai police is now using a mobile app called FaceTagr which could scan the faces of suspects and search them in a database of known offenders, reported The Times of India.
Moreover, police have already solved five cases using this app.
Chennai city police commissioner AK Viswanathan told ToI that currently they have 12,000 offenders in the list and they will increase it to 40,000 soon with the help of the state crime records bureau. Police have mainly collected particulars of suspects involved in 16 types of cases which includes theft, robbery, dacoity in Chennai. It has already been installed in the phones of about 500 police personnel in T Nagar.
